A ship was sunk somewhere 2000 years ago. It remains was found couple of days back. Among the debris was a first aid box which gave a remarkable insight of the old medical practices that earlier sailors used to intake. The medicines found were able to cure dysentery and other similar ailments.

The first aid box discovered on the board was a wooden box. It contained pills made from ground up vegetables like onion, cabbage, carrots, chestnuts and other ingredients that are treated as vegetables. The tablets were sealed so specifically and nicely that in-case they remain under water for more than two millennia can survive well. These pills also contain extract of parsley, radish hibiscus and yarrow.

These tablets were found in 136 tin-lined wooden vials on a trading ship that was somewhere 50ft in length. It is said that this ship mi9ght have wrecked around 130 BC. The coast might be of Tuscany.

According to medical scientists, these pills might be used to treat some gastrointestinal complaints of sailors who would be suffering from diarrhea or dysentery.

Dr Alain Touwaide one of the researcher from the team said that the finding is really a spectacular one; the boxes were sealed so tightly that medicine get hardly hampered. As the medicines were mainly made from vegetables so these vegetables might have been crust with mortar and pestle and not with the help of any crushing equipment. This is because fibres in the tablets were still alive. The tablets also contained clay which is even today used to treat gastrointestinal and gastronomical problems.

Archaeologist and historians believes that the finding of medicine box suggests that ship might also be carrying Doctor on the board. If Doctor was not possible, the person who used to treat sailor was somewhere a trained in rudimentary and first Aid.The first aid box also contained spatulas, mortar and pestle, suction cups etc.

The complete testing of the finding was completed in about 22 long years. The ship was found off the port of Piombino in the year 1974 and the wooden first aid chest box was found in 1989, and now it is today that scientist completely able to extract the content of the pills. They find it by doing DNA sequencing.
