Alzheimer Disease Could Be Treated By Lithium

Progressively damaging motor neuron condition is known as Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists claim that it could be treated by naturally occurring element lithium which is extremely inexpensive.
It is seen that antidepressant drugs were in use to treat bipolar disorder and mood swings and now researchers in Brazil at Sao Paulo University, led by Dr Orestes Forlenza discovered that pills in elderly people can slow down memory loss by reducing their cognitive decline. It was also notice that there was a reduction in building of tangles of damaging proteins known as phosphor-tau in the brain fluid which characterized Alzheimer’s disease.
The study examined 41 people aging over 60 with mild cognitive impairment, and among them 21 took low doses of lithium each day for a year. Then all under went the test of memory and attention and their sample of brain fluid were analyzed for tau concentrations.
