Auditor States Welsh Hospital Food Needs To Improve

According to a finance watch dog, Wales hospital catering is improving day by day, but more efforts should be put to ensure that the patients get the right nutritional care.
The auditor general said, several patients were satisfied with the food but all did not receive the help that they needed at the time of meal. A large quantity of meal was also being wasted thus the daily cost of the patients meal varied greatly.
Nursing chiefs states that a significant work had been done for the improvement of the meal. According to the report, the patients of several Welsh hospitals are provided with a good quality food and with appropriate choice. However still more improvement is required as the auditor general finds that many patients do not receive the help needed at the mealtime.
The report also found that the care plans for patients with nutritional problem were not always maintained. The auditor general for Wales, Huw Vaughan Thomas, said more efforts are required to improve the foods. He said NHS organizations should understand the importance of patient’s nutrition and therefore ensure effective responsibilities at ward level to implement the best practice.
According to the report the average daily cost of a patient’s food ranged from £1.33 to £5.66. And it is also seen that everyday an unacceptable amount of food is wasted in many ward. Hence if it is tackled in an effective way than a significant amount of saving can be done.
