Breakthrough For Cardiac Patients: Only One Hour Operation To Change Heart Valve

London: Now, cardiac patients who are too sick to have open-heart surgery can also hope for the better. Thanks to the team of doctors in Britain!
A procedure, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), has been developed by an Indian-origin surgeon-led team. This procedure does not require bypass surgery to treat hear-valve failure.
TAVI is being considered as a real breakthrough for severely ill patients. Being a cheaper treatment as compared to long hours of medication, it can be a reason of hope for thousands of people.
The most prevalent valve disease is aortic stenosis. It usually occurs when calcium deposits in the main valve of heart. However, defects related to birth are also one of the major causes for this disease in children.
In TAVI treatment, a small cut is made in thigh or chest. A stainless steel tube is inserted inside of it, say surgeons. While conducting operation, a catheter with a deflated balloon in end, is inserted into the body.
When this catheter reaches the valve, the balloon gets inflated and causes mesh tube to expand. Consequently, the broken heart valve gets crushed.
