Computers:Are They Killing The Collaborative Teaching Method?

Are you considering gifting your kid with laptop, iPad or computer this Christmas? Then think twice because there is on ongoing debate over the increase of digital devices in classroom. Today high schools, colleges and even grade schools are relying on laptops for teaching and this is the reason why students are dependent on digital gadgets than the traditional method of instruction.

Experts are of the opinion that learning should be an interactive process but should it be digitalized? This is the big question. To answer this question, the Hillbrook School in Los Gatos, California decided to give iPads to every student for use in their classroom. Several universities and other grads school like Stanford University School of Medicine are also giving out laptops and iPads to every student. Some district schools such as Fergus Falls in Minnesota are also experimenting on this.

Many parents are concerned if this screen time on computer is healthy for their kids. This is due to the side-effects which kids might have while using computer all day at school. They fear issues like blurred vision, back problems which they might get while leaning over iPad all day long.

Jill Mikols Etesse, a mother of two says that her two kids’ one in preschool and other in third grade do not use a computer all day at school. She says that it might cause neck strain or other physical problems. She only allows them to use computer only for specific period of time.

Educators favor a more collaborative method of teaching and agree that the time spent on computer should be a part of the set curriculum. They argued with the point that a dedicated laptop is not needed for each child.
