Death Of Hockey Players In Plane Crash Causes Deep Concern In Russia

The unfortunate plane crash that gulped 43 people including one of the top ice hockey teams of the country has caused deep anguish particularly amongst the sports fraternity. The President Dmitry Medvedev has come up with his call for an overhaul in the aviation sector.
The anguish is shared by the sportsmen of whole world. Sportsmen and fans from all corners of the globe have paid homage to the players amidst the mourning in the country. The Yak-42 plane had crashed into bank of a river near Yaroslavl. The team that became victim of this deadly incident was the Lokolotiv Yaroslavl team.
Fans gathered to the place on Wednesday and offered flowers and scarves. The mourners remained over there in the stadium till late in the evening.
A popular Russian newspaper wrote, “Tears on the ice”… “Yet another terrible air crash has shaken Russia”.
Medvedev had to address a political conference at the stadium. He has expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
“Lokomotiv fans are grieving, the whole country is grieving,” he said. He was expected to go to the site of the crash. He has called for an overhauling in the civil aviation in Russia after this ghastly incident.
Condolences as well as concerns about the safety of the Russians older planes were also received from abroad.
President of the International Ice Hockey Federation, Rene Fasel conveyed his condolences on behalf of the global ice hockey fraternity. Hockey players from other countries have offered help to rebuild the team.
The disastrous incident is being compared with the 1958 incident of plane crash that took the lives of a number of English soccer club members.
The deadly incident 250 km north of Moscow left only one of the 37 players and sport officials surviving. Some reports suggest that the search in the Volga was still on.
The two survivors were both in severe condition. The body of the surviving player Alexander Galimov is burnt over 90 percent. The other survivor is a sports official, he too is in a critical condition.
The victims belonged to many countries including the players and coaches from Czech Republic, Germany, Canada, Sweden and Slovakia. The plane crashed soon after it took flight for Minsk, Belarus where the team had to play a match. But the match will never be played now.
