Commonwealth GamesCANBERRA:– As the Indian capital prepares for the start of the Commonwealth Games in two weeks’ time, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) on Monday said there is now a “high risk of a terrorist attack” in New Delhi.

In Delhi’s ancient walled city, DFAT has updated its travel advice in the wake of Sunday’s attack on a busload of tourists outside the historic Jama Masjid mosque in Delhi’s ancient walled city; DFAT has updated its travel advice. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of athletes and tourists who plan to attend the Games as two Taiwanese men were injured after gunmen opened fire on their bus outside the mosque.

DFAT warned that Australians should pay close attention to their personal security at all times as there is a “high risk of terrorist attack in New Delhi”. The Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee said in a statement that elaborate arrangements had been made to provide athletes and officials with a safe and secure environment and also emphasized that shooting would have no impact on Games. The only major terrorist attack on foreigners in India has been a blast at a bakery in Pune in February, since the Mumbai attacks.

For next month’s games despite the security fears, the family of Australian swimmer Nick D’Arcy will travel to Delhi.

According to media sources, there is an 80 percent chance the games will come under some form of attack from terrorist as asserted by the authors of a security risk assessment. Sue, Nick D’Arcy’s mother, asserted she is prepared to put her trust in Indian and Australian authorities. Sue told news media on Monday, “We’ve got every faith in the Indian Government and Australian Swimming and the Australian Federal Police and we will be careful”. “We will do everything that’s directed to us, that’s the best we can hope for really”.
