Dismissal Of Food Labels With Pseudo Health Claims By Euro MPs

Now, pseudo claims like “now contains 15% less sugar” would not be accepted as per the decision by Euro MPs which restricts alterations to food labels.

Renate Sommer MEP, chief negotiator on food labels of parliament, told that these false claims related to reduced salt, sugar or fat, “mislead consumers”.

The MEPs opined that even the draft legislation will not be as effective in boosting companies to produce healthier foods. And, as a result EU commission needs to rewrite it.

The “reduced” label signifies 30% decreased components, at present this is the meaning.

BEUC, European consumer organization greeted vote of MEPs and expressed- “consumers do not need to be confronted with yet another nutrition claim, especially one which is misleading and adds to confusion… “What they need is for industry to put public health first and step up their reformulation efforts”.

An apprehension was expressed by FoodDrinkEurope an industry lobby group. It constitutes 18 most important food and drink companies.

The group squabbled that users “will not be informed of important reformulations to foods so that they can make an informed food choice”. It opined that label will facilitate makers to “communicate incremental nutrition changes”.
