Djokovic Rules At The Laureus Awards
Novak Djokovic not just rules the tennis court, he is top in the entire sporting world as well. The Serbian ace confirmed his rapidly growing status as he won the Laureus sportsman of the year award held in London.
He put his counterparts Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer completely in shade during 2011. Now he topped the list that comprised of sports players such as Cadel Evans for cycling, Usain Bolt for athletics, Lionel Messi for soccer, Sebastian Vettel for Formula One and Dirk Nowitzki for basketball.
The world number 1 ranked player has won 4 out of the last 5 grand slams. This includes the previous month’s epic final at the Australian Open.
Djokovic is humbled to achieve this honor. He said, “It’s a spectacular feeling.”
He also said, “What stands out most for me in these two days I spent in London is getting to know the legends of sport and practically absorbing every word they said.”
He indicated how much keen he is to triumph at the French Open. This is the only main trophy that misses his collection. He remarked, “Obviously, Roland Garros is the one to win this year. All the grand slams and Olympic Games, they are my priorities this year.”
The tennis superstar’s triumph at central London means the men’s award is now taken by a player from tennis in 6 out of the last 8 years.
The award for lifetime achievement went to England and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton. The soccer great missed this ceremony due to some minor operation.
