Driverless Electric Vehicles Completed Journey From Italy To China
Melbourne: Four driverless and map less electric vans were completed successfully 13000 Km test drive from Italy to China. This week these vans arrived at Shanghai Expo are equipped with seven video cameras and four solar powered laser scanners that work together and detect obstacles to avoid any accident.
The vehicles have sensors that enabled them to navigate via wide extremes in weather, road and traffic conditions. These equipments collect data and analyze them for further research. These vehicles are part of an experiment sponsored by the European Research Council and their target to improve automotive technology and safety features.
A research engineer for the project, the Age quoted Isabella Fredriga said that “We didn’t know the route, I mean what the roads would have been and if we would have found nice roads, traffic, lots of traffic, medium traffic, crazy drivers or regular drivers, so we encountered the lot.”
Information from sensors analyzed and automatically adjusted vehicle’s direction and speed with the help of a computerized artificial vision system dubbed GOLD, that help in Lane Detector and Genetic Obstacles. The whole vehicle controlled by computer and follows the instructions from computer that drive car’s steering wheel and follow traffic rules.
The vehicles runs with max speed of 60 Km/hr and recharged for eight hour after every three hours. Fredriga said that, “There were a few scary moments. Like when the following vehicle bumped into the leading one and that was just because we forgot, we stopped and we forgot to turn the system off”.
