Facing Obesity? It Is All There In Brain

Rapidly increasing obesity in Americans of almost every age group has been associated to biological factors. This was declared by the scientists of Cincinnati Diabetes and Obesity Center in the periodical Cell Metabolism. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one third of adults in America face the problem of obesity. And, this number is ever increasing.

obesityAs per Randy Seeley, PhD, co-author of the journal there are number of governing causes i.e. biological systems, of the body weight of any individual. And, it is the reason why obese people find it hard to reduce weight and maintain it that way. If obesity epidemic is to be made clear then it is necessary to know environment’s role in changing the biological systems to boost increase in weight.

Present society has a trend of excessively consuming high-fat and calorie-rich food. And, it boosts gain in weight. Whatever substances a human consumes, it has ability to transform brain parts which regulate the human body’s weight.

Working of Leptin in Brain is Hampered by High-Fat Diets

According to Dr. Seeley- “Leptin is a key hormone that is secreted from fat tissue, or adipose tissue, and its main function is to inhibit appetite. Via a number of molecular mechanisms, eating a high-fat diet reduces the actions of leptin in the brain. This miscommunication can lead to increased food intake and weight gain.

Evolutionary speaking, we are designed to want to eat foods that are high in fat and gain weight because it made it easier to survive times when food was not available,” he continues. “However, that is no longer a real concern since food is almost always available, but we still have a biological desire to eat these calorically dense foods. So, how do we intervene and change this drive? “

Obesity is the real culprit behind unfavorable financial, health and social after effects. Dr. Seeley is of the belief that it is time to apply many of the thriving therapeutic intrusions available.

Dr. Seeley opined that more important it is to find the biological systems which make it difficult to reduce weight. And, the real job is to make these obstructing factors work in favor of weight reduction. It is a dire need to know the molecular interface among food consumed and the body weight regulating brain circuit. This knowledge would help obese individuals in losing weight.

If this is implemented then people trying to lose weight would be able to do it in sync with their biological system as oppose to regulating will power to prevail over biology which sees them regain obesity. This attempt calls for number of scientists from various areas to decrease monetary and human spending related to obesity epidemic.
