Fish Livers Are Good Source of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Washington: From University of Almeria (Spain) a team of researchers, confirmed that fish livers are one of the good sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids and they are beneficial for health. One of the fish known as Anchovies contains highest level of these fatty acids.
The edible fish liver are good source of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), and more over those belonging to omega 3 family like docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) says Jose Luis Guil-Guerrero, the lead author of the study.
These fatty acids are used for the treatment of several diseases like depression, some kind of Cancer, Schizophrenia, Cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. In this this study the focus was on twelve kind of fishe that are commonly eaten in south eastern Spain, like shorfin mako, hake, and European pilchard. And the highest levels of LCPUFA were found in the livers of great weever and European anchovy.
Guil-Guerrero said “”Unfortunately, discarding these livers means that all their nutritional properties are missed”.
