FTC Approves But Eu Regulators Still Examining $7.68 Billion Intel-Mcafee Deal

Intel had announced in August to acquire the McAfee for an astonishing amount – $7.68 billion. With this deal, Intel has plans to incorporate the antivirus security features to its chips. However, the regulators in the US and Europe were examining the deal.

Now, the giant chipmaker has received the green light from FTC for its proposed McAfee acquisition. Kevin Sellers, Voice President (Investor Relations), Intel told the same in a note on company’s investor relation Website; “The Federal Trade Commission has concluded its review of the proposed McAfee transaction and cleared it”.

Meanwhile, the regulators in Europe are still examining the Intel-McAfee deal. If EU regulators approve this deal then it will turn into the biggest acquisition in last 42 years.

EU regulators have reported initial concerns of the antitrust implications of Intel-owned McAfee. Recently, Wall Street Journal cited that regulators have questioned other security software companies on the issue of Intel providing McAfee products with privileged access to its chips, thus giving a step-up over competitors.

Previously, European Union fined Intel with $1.45 billion after founding it guilty of engaging in illegal antitrust actions framed to hamper rival chipmakers. Both McAfee and Intel informed they are working with the European Commission to get the approval.

McAfee will turn into a subsidiary of Intel and reports to Intel software and services group after completion of this deal. Intel is supposed to launch first Intel-McAfee product in 2011.
