Gagan Narang Qualifies For The Olympics In London

[private]Gagan Narang performed brilliantly in the World Championship taking place in Munich and bagged the bronze medal for his country in 10 meter air rifle shooting event. The performance was good enough for him to qualify for the London Olympics. He is the first Indian to qualify for the mega event to take place in 2012.

Narang, currently ranked number 2 in the world, got a score of 597 in the qualifying round and 102 in the finals. His final score read 699 which fetched him the bronze medal. Lot was expected from Abhinav Bindra but he got 25th position and could not reach the final round.

Niccolo Campriani of Italy won the gold with a score of 702.5. Peter Sidi of Hungary won the silver by getting 700.4 points.

The day before he achieved this feat he was ignored for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. Coach Sunny Thomas said that Narang was disappointed for not being chosen for the award. Thomas encouraged him to perform well and show the world that he deserves Khel Ratna.

India has high hopes from Gagan in the coming Commonwealth games in Delhi and London Olympics.[/private]
