Genentech will Appeal for Breast Cancer Drug to FDA

Breast Cancer Drugs

Genentech will enhance its efforts to get approved the drug Avastin , a treatment for breast cancer. Genentech will urge FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for a one more chance to show that medicine works effectively.

It has been reported that Genentech will approach F.D.A. and urge to reconsider its decision taken in last December. Last year, F.D.A. had revoked the approval of Austin saying that it was not helpful for patients.

The company is now arguing that even if F.D.A. found it ineffective, the approval should be given as Genentech is planning for one more trial.

An accelerated plan started in 1990s under which some drugs for serious medicines were approved even with less evidence. Many drugs including Avastin were approved that time but later on some approvals were withdrawn.
This is the first time that the authority will consider an appeal by any company.

The discussions regarding the drug have aroused different passions and perceptions among people. Some are in favor of revoking it while some want its retention.

“It’s so depressing to think that a federal agency can make a decision that can potentially cause me to die,” said Crystal Hanna, 35, a mother of two from Parkersburg, W.Va., who said Avastin has kept her cancer under control for almost a year.

Even if the drug is invalidated for treatment of breast cancer, it will continue to be used to treat colon, brain, kidney cancers.
