Genes Linked To Prostate Cancer Identified

Experts have identified the genes which are associated with prostate cancer. This identification can help in calculation of risk associated with the disease, stated the researchers.

In a study conducted in UK, seven variants have been found which are associated with prostate cancer.

More are the variants; more chances are there to develop disease.

Scientists are able to predict risk of breast cancer in women but for prostate cancer, they feel difficulty in this calculation.

In the latest study, promulgated in Nature Genetics, scientists observed around 60,000 men to have a genetic study.

Prof.Ros Eeles, the lead researcher, said that around 40 links have been identified which enhances the risk of prostate cancer.

“This means that the 1 per cent of men who carry most of these variants are about four times more likely than an average person to have prostate cancer, giving them a nearly one in two chance of developing the disease.”

According to Dr.Kate Holmes, though the results of the study are not definitive, they are useful to calculate risk of prostate cancer. It will be important to have a thorough study about prostate cancer and new ways of its prevention and treatment will be found.
