Healthy Lifestyle Lowers Mortality Rate Among Older Adults

Older adults who maintain a healthy diet may live longer.  According to a research carried by American Dietetic Association, older people who consumed low-fat diet and included lots of fruits and vegetables in their meal had lowered their risk of being attacked by fatal diseases. This is one way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This study was compared with the diets of 2,500 US older adults in the age group of 70 to 79.

On the contrary those who ate high diet rich like cheese, whole milk, ice-cream and other fatty products had highest risk of death. The study showed that 12 extra people survived fatal diseases in ten years if they continued to eat healthy. The participants were divided in six different groups and kept a note of how often they ate a particular food.

The groups included fried food and alcohol, high-fat rich dairy products, sweets, desserts, meat and refined grains.

Healthy food diet included low-fat dairy products, whole grains, dairy products, fish, vegetables and poultry. People belonging to this group led healthier lifestyle, refrained from smoking and were more active than other participants. This group consumed less amounts of meat, fried food, alcohol, added fat and high-calorie drinks.

The former group consumed more of high fat dairy products which included milk, yoghurt, ice cream, cheese and junk food. They ate less of rice, low fat dairy products, less poultry and pasta.

Dr, Amy Anderson, the lead researcher from  University of Maryland concluded that no difference in death risk were noticed between “breakfast cereal”, “healthy food eaters” or “ refined grains” eaters.  She also suggested that older group that maintained a healthy lifestyle have lower  mortality rate.
