High Sodium and Low Potassium Diet enhances Heart Risk

High Sodium

According to researchers, low potassium diet and high sodium diet increases risk of heart attack.

“Americans who eat a diet high in sodium and low in potassium have a 50% increased risk of death from any cause and about about twice the risk of death from heart disease,” says researcher Elena V. Kuklina, MD, PhD. She is a nutritional epidemiologist with the CDC division for heart disease and stroke prevention.

Experts have said that diet containing low potassium and high sodium increases risk of blood pressure but the link between sodium and potassium is not well established and clear.

Around 12000 people were observed by researchers. They were analysed for a period of around 15 years .Around 2000 people died during the observation itself. It was found that people who consumed 1500 mg salt a day were 73 percent more prone to heart risks.

But researchers have said that there is no established link between cardiovascular disease and intake of sodium.

They looked at different ratios- and found highest sodium plus lowest potassium- as the worst ratio. It increases the risk by 50 percent.
