First Implantation of Lab-made Organ

For the first time, a patient received a lab developed windpipe. It was made from patient’s stem cells and donor tissues were not used in that, stated researchers.
Previous transplants that were generated in lab used either tissues or donor windpipe but not an organ.
In London lab, a trachea was created by scientists than connects branches and voice box in lungs.
On June 9, the synthetic windpipe was implanted into a man of 36 years old suffering from tracheal cancer. Now, the patient is fine and will be released from hospital, stated Dr. Paolo, professor of regenerative medicine.
Tracheal cancer cases are found very rarely. The patient was diagnosed initially in 2008 and had tried every available treatment. His windpipe was almost blocked.
His doctors recommended to grow an organ. A Y shaped framework was created by scientists and they modeled it similar to the shape of patient’s windpipe. The form was dipped in a solution to have the growth of cells.
“Stem cells from the own patient were growing inside and outside,” Macchiarini said. “This structure was becoming a living structure.”
The new trachea was implanted and his body accepted it. “The results were quite good, but unfortunately we were still dependent” on organ donation, which can take months, Macchiarini said.
