Intel revealed a new category of laptops which include best features of tablets. World’s top chipmaker struggles to find its footing in the exploding market for mobile gadgets.

Computer manufacturer company Asus is expected to show off its first new PC in the ‘Ultra book’ class at the Computer technology exhibition in Taipei. Intel said this plus announced that models would go on sale made by other manufacturers by Christmas. Cost of the gadget would be under $1,000.

According to reports new Ultra books will be lightweight and svelte but still they will have high-performance processors.

A senior vice president at Intel, Tom Kilroy, said they should account for 40% of laptop sales to consumers by the end of next year. “We’re shooting for ultra-responsive. You’ll have always-on, always-connected, much more responsive devices, similar to what you would see with a tablet today such as an iPad,” he added.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel is eager to develop laptops more attractive to consumers who are increasingly captivated by Apple’s iPad and other mobile gadgets.

Its processor has 80% of the world’s PCs but Intel has failed so far to adapt them for tablets and smart phones. The other manufacturers like Motorola and Apple favor processors made using energy-efficient technology licensed by Britain’s ARM Holdings.

Intel took the wraps off next-generation 3D technology this month that crams more transistors onto microchips. Company is betting it will ultimately become a significant benefit in smart phones and tablets.

Also the company has planned to shrink the circuits on its mobile chips by three sizes within three years. It would be faster pace than normal to make them more efficient.

Rumors that PC maker Acer Inc is planning to launch a tablet within months using Intel’s brand new Oak Trail chip and Google Android OS, but Kilroy declined to comment on it. Such kind of devise would be a major test of Oak Trail. Intel’s first chip designed especially to support widely popular Android OS and for tablets.

According to Kilroy price of Ultrabook laptops would be around $600.
