Junk Food Advertisements Boost Kids Appetite

Advertisements on television make children hungry, stated a study published in Pediatrics. Thus, there are growing suggestions to reduce junk food advertisements to combat obesity in children.
In line with that, American Academy of Pediatrics issued some policy statements on Monday. Research team headed by Emma Boyland at the University of Liverpool in UK found that junk food whet appetite of children for high fat and sweet diet.
“Exposure to television food commercials enhanced high television viewers’ preferences for branded foods and increased reported preferences for all food items (branded and unbranded) relative to the low television viewers,” she wrote.
Researchers found that children exhibited greater inclination towards junk food after watching advertisements for long time compared to days when they would not these advertisements.
On an average, kids want high fat foods, high carb after observing these ads.
But researchers also stated that the impact by advertisements make a minimal difference in the number of food products that children want.
A lot of other factors also play a role in increasing willingness of children to have junk.
Thus, this study has comprehensively provided the effect of food marketing on children’s health. The problem is that children watch TV on their computers and mobile as well which adds up to total number of hours.
Here, the responsibility of parents increase many fold. They should observe the activities keenly and limit the TV time of their children.
