Lithium : Effective to Fight Parkinson

Parkinsons Disease

Lithium is very effective in preventing damages to brain because of Parkinson’s disease, according to the clinical tests conducted on this medicine.

Research has shown that it slows down the progression of Alzheimer and can be a comparatively cheaper therapy to prevent various brain disorders.

Scientists at Buck institute in San Francisco revealed this after conducting study on mice and they will conduct trials on humans soon.

A soft alkali metal, the major compound of Lithium is frequently used to treat mood swings and mania.

Earlier in this year, a small study was conducted on people suffering from cognitive impairment- trouble with thinking and memory. It was found that Lithium postponed the progression of Alzheimer.

According to psychiatrists, the formation of analoid plaques gets slowed down by the compounds of Lithium.

According to American researchers, Parkinson is caused because of death of specific nerve cells and lithium was shown to reduce or stop the formation of toxins in body and also to prevent cell death.

“The fact that lithium’s safety profile in humans is well understood greatly reduces trial risk and lowers a significant hurdle to getting it into the clinic,” said Prof Julie Anderson of Buck Institute.

Around 120,000 people in UK are suffering from Parkinson which is responsible for slow movement, stiffness in muscles and tremors. Though there is no effective cure for the disease presently but there are many treatments available which can reduce the incidence of symptoms.
