Mothers-to- be Smoking for Smaller Babies

Though most women know that smoking is harmful during pregnancy, they continue doing it, said professor Nick of Southampton University.
In annual meeting of European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Stockholm, “It is important that people who believe that a smaller baby means an easier birth take into account the increased risk of complicated deliveries in smokers, as well as the risk of disease later in life which goes with low birth weight.”
He with his team has stated that women, who quit smoking when they are pregnant, can protect their unborn child from any sort of harm.
Over 50,000 pregnancies were observed and smoking habits were linked to weight of baby. It was found that more the smoking, more are chances of lower weight babies. Ladies who smoked around ten times a day delivered babies 300 g less in weight compared to normal ones.
But smoking during pregnancy can lead to grave consequences. This can change the behavior of mothers as well. It also causes an impact on transportation of nutrients from mother to baby.
It is also stated that toxins found in cigarettes are also harmful to foetuses.
