Potato Gene Mapping Can Boost Crops

Genetic mapping of potato has been done for the first time. Secrets of potato have been uncovered by the scientists for the first time in UK. They will keep observing it for next few years.
Every organism carries a genome, a blueprint or instruction book which explains the gene sequencing. These genes control different aspects of organism. A minor genetic change can give rise to altogether new variety. This is the reason every individual has different sequence of genes put together.
According to experts, this discovery can be a revolution in breeding of potato and also enhance food security. This research was undertaken by UK researchers at James Hutton Institute in Dundee. Experts hope new varieties of potatoes in future because of this gene mapping.
But it may take time to develop new varieties. These varieties will be more efficient in terms of quality, pests’ resistance, disease and nutritional value.
Professor Iain Gordon, the chief executive of The James Hutton Institute said: “With global population forecast to reach nine billion by 2050, there will be many more mouths to feed and the genome sequence will allow scientists and breeders to increase the efficiency of potato production to help meet this challenge.”
