food related illness

According to a new report, most food borne diseases are caused by contamination of poultry products by the bacteria, Campylobacter. The report has been issued by the University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute.

Ten most risky combinations of microorganisms and food have been identified. Michael Batz, the lead author of this report, calls for a change in food system. He further adds that different agencies of the government should work in tandem to bring out the change.

The top five pathogens who are responsible for causing sickness are Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Toxoplasma gondii and norovirus.

These pathogens are responsible for around $12 billion economic losses annually. Economic losses consider different aspects including medical care, disability and productivity loss.

According to the report, Salmonella is a leading microorganism that causes disease. Food products contaminated by Salmonella are under top ten food-pathogen combination.
