Riverboat Sinks In Russia: 100 Are Missing or Dead
Moscow: There are reports of more than 100 people either feared dead or missing because of sudden sinking of cruiser. As per the Russian officials, this incident took place on Volga River in afternoon of Sunday. The pleasure cruiser named Bulgaria carried 188 people which included 46 crew and 142 passengers. The incident took place 450 miles east of Moscow.
As per the officials, two bodies are recovered and 80 passengers have been rescued so far. Among them, 13 are rushed to hospitals. This was told by emergency situation ministry spokeswoman of Russia, Irina andrianova. The divers found ship lying at a depth of 60 feet and wanted to know whether anyone was still alive inside.
Andrianova said, “According to our divers chances to find people alive are minimal.” The minister of emergency situations Sergei ordered rescue workers to come to a conclusion whether survivors had managed to reach anyone of the 13 islands nearby. The prime cause of sinking of ship has been described as overloading. This was told by a law enforcement source to a news agency. The cause of tragedy has been described as rain and thunderstorm as told by one of the survivors whose grandson and wife are missing in the tragedy.
There are some survivors who said boat was packed with tourists and sank all of a sudden. The television of Russia showed a chilling footage of the survivors who were under a state of shock because of the death of their relatives. One young woman was grieved because of death of her ten year daughter.
A woman, wrapped in towel said, “We all found ourselves buried alive inside the boat like in a sarcophagus and were trying to get out through the window.”
She further said, “I was holding her by the hand but then she began to choke and pushed me away.”
She was survived by her husband and added there were many still on board. A tearful woman beating her breast said, “Our baby remained there, our baby remained there.” As per a middle aged survivor, two boats carrying passenger cargo failed to provide help despite victims in water waving desperately. Finally, one passenger liner stopped and picked survivors up. The vessel was manufactured in year 1955 in Czechoslovakia. It was equipped with two rescue boats which could accommodate 36 people. Besides this, it also had rescue rafts meant for 120 people.
The accident took place in the biggest river flowing through European portion of Russia. It is considered to be biggest ship wreck in Russia since sinking of passenger cruiser many years ago leading to death of 423 people. This incident had taken place near Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.
