Rushdie’s India Visit: Is An Impending Threat To Law And Order?
The controversial Indian Origin in exile writer Mr. Salman Rushdie is invited to visit India. His purpose is to attend a literature festival going to be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Though he will not be present on the inaugural ceremony (on 20th Jan 2012) of the esteemed event of nation and international writers, he will reportedly join the “restricted” events for writes only.

Indians, especially local folks from Rajasthan are opposing Rushdie’s visit. Giving it a color of law and order threat, Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot met the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.
The author of Satanic Verses and many other books, Rushdie is accused of playing on the Muslim sentiments. Neither the Centre nor the State government can obstructed him to come to India, as he is from Indian origin.
Namita Gokhle, one of the members of the organizing committee, confirms that they know, understand and respect the cultural and religious sensibilities. But, none on earth can curb the right of a writer to attend a creative gathering.
She said that there is no specification from the international author if he would attend literary meeting at all or not. But, the Rajasthan Government has begun to take pre-cautionary steps to prevent any security chaos in the state as well as the in the country.
Chief Home Secretary is monitoring the entire issue along with communicating with the Organizing committee of the festival. At the advent of State Legislature Election in the six Indian states, this visit of Rushdie, according to many, may make the situation worse.
But, Political thinkers and social activist has taken a hand on everything adding that the author’s visit to the writers’ gathering will bring no effect on elections.
Flaunting the might of his pen, Rushdie is a well-known liberal writer. If he comes to India to meet restricted events of literature, will it make any issue? This question is yet to answer.
Time will say if a writer can really bring socio-political threat or not. The ruling party of the country, while washing its hand, said it’s all up to the Government to take any decision on this issue.
