Somdev Triumphs at Tennis Singles Final in Asian Games
Somdev Devvarman bagged the gold medal for India as he triumphed at the final of the men’s tennis singles at the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Tuesday. He scored a convincing 6-1 6-2 victory against Denis Istomin, who was top seed for the event and currently ranked 44 in the world.
This was the second gold medal for Somdev from tennis events this time. He had already won the gold in the doubles event of men’s category along with his partner Sanam Singh.
This was the seventh overall gold for India in this edition.
This is the first time that an Indian player bagged gold medal in the singles event of men’s category. Three players had bagged bronze for India prior to this at the Games. Leander Paes in 1994, Mahesh Bhupathi in 1998 and Prahlad Srinath in 1998 were the players who won bronze medals for India in past.
Somdev is currently ranked 106 in singles in the world. This was the third medal of him in the Games this time. He had also won bronze medal in the team event.
