South Africa May Have Millions More H.I.V. Infections

South Africa, which is already home to 5-7 million H.I.V.- positive people, is expected to have an additional five millions to get infected during the next 20 years. This fear is there despite of the fact that the nation increases more than double its already considerable finance to be spent on the treatment and prevention. This statement goes in accordance with the report presented here on Friday to the country’s leading advisory body on AIDS policy.

South Africa is the Africa’s leading economy. However, the study concludes that it faces a “major and mounting financial challenge” to comfort its AIDS problem. The study explains that about $102 billion would need to be spent over the next two decades just to keep the number of new infections at the projected 5 million mark. Not even a single official at the conference wanted to comment on the report. Howveer, Mark Heywood, who is the council’s deputy chairman and executive director of the AIDS Law Project based in Johannesburg, said that he was “gravely concerned” about the numbers cited.

“I found it all difficult to accept,” he said. “Our prevention strategy was such a mess for such a long time that I felt sure we could bring down infection rates at a faster pace now that we’re working at it.” Mr. Heywood also said he did not know where any extra financing would come from. “I think the budget is strained already.”
