Struggle Against Tropical Disease: UK Increases Initiatives

According to the ministers, help from foreign sources to remove patristic diseases will increase five times. This type of disease slays and mutilates millions of people, all over the world.

Uk Increases InitiativesHuge amount of 245 million pounds is the expenditure for combating diseases like bilharzia and river blindness. They expect that aids and free of cost medicines from pharmacy companies might assist in eliminating certain diseases.

An expert from UK told that the motive was to provide as many as billion treatments, all over the world. Just a small part of funds decided for drive against killer diseases like TB, Malaria and HIV is received by “neglected tropical diseases”.

As per the campaigners, even less amount of money is sufficient to make big changes in the life of people from tropical countries that are poor.

At the time of declaring the aid package, The Department for International Development told that these funds will save the lives of around 140 million people suffering from parasitic infections in the coming years.

The specifically targeted diseases are bilharzia that hinders growth of child, destroys internal organs and ultimately resulting in death or persistent bad health, and, elephantiasis which is a mosquito-borne parasite and results in unusual enlargement of genitals and limbs.

The 3rd important disease, river blindness, is caused by parasitic worms and result in rigorous uneasiness and loss of eyesight.

And, another infection spread from water, Guinea worm, renders patients on bed for many months, prior to the surfacing of parasitic worm. It can grow up to 3ft. (91.4cm) long.

Unbearable Pain

Each of the above mentioned infection is curable or treatable by useful medicines available in the market. And, it can now benefit millions of people as pharmacy companies have decided to provide the for free.

Tropical DiseaseStephen O’Brien, International Development Minister, opined, “These diseases thrive on poverty and have horrendous consequences for sufferers, especially children, leaving them in debilitating pain with severe disabilities.”

“The world is increasingly coming together to build on the long-standing commitment of the pharmaceutical industry to rid the world of these terrible diseases.”

“British support will take the ‘neglected’ out of ‘neglected tropical diseases’ and will not just save lives but transform lives.”

Professor David Molyneux of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine which is a campaigner of increasing international funds from a long time told that he was quite happy by the declaration.

He told, “If this level of support is sustained, I’m confident we can eliminate these diseases entirely in some countries.”

“As far as the British taxpayer is concerned, this money will offer more health to more people than anything else – it really is the most effective use of the money.”

“Currently we are treating approximately 800 million people a year, and we’re aiming for a billion.”
