UK Doubles The Amount To Fight Polio

The UK government has decided to double the amount of money for the global campaign to wipe out polio. The money for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) means to vaccine extra 45m children.

Over the last 20 years, the number of polio cases is decreasing and till now it had been cut by 99%. The polio condition is about to eradicate. But it is still endemic in many countries like Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Currently the UK government donates £20m each year to GPEI, which is led by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The extra money will be given after the agreement that routine immunization will be increased in the affected countries.

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has decided to donate extra $102m.

According to UK Prime Minister, David Cameron it is possible to eradicate polio completely but the only thing missing is a real and sustained political will.
